FreeFrom Food Awards Superhero

Clare Marriage of Doves Farm

'Clare did not start out as a freefrom manufacturer at all but as an organic farmer and miller. But fortunately for us, Clare’s mother was prescribed a gluten-free diet to help her multiple sclerosis so Clare used her new mill to grind corn flour and then started baking gf for her mum.

One thing led to another, as it does, and by 2001 the Marriages had built a dedicated gluten-free mill and were already developing some of the products which now fit into our No Top 14 category. But what really qualifies Clare as superhero was her development of her freefrom flour blends -  bread flour, plain flour, self raising flour. As so many of you will know, because you use them to create your own products, her blends are all but interchangeable with ‘normal’ wheat flour and have turned the whole business of gluten-free baking from a nightmare to a pleasure.

So, for her flour blends – and for her amazing contribution to the growth of freefrom – our Superhero! Clare Marriage.'

Runners Up

Adrian Ling – Plamil Foods

'Plamil Foods are really the gread granddaddies of freefrom food having started as a vegan company back in the 1950s. But since Adrian took over in 2005 their focus has been increasingly on freefrom. Indeed, Adrian is much loved by the mums of nut, milk and egg allergic children as Plamil facilities are dedicated nut, milk, egg and gluten-free. Adrian is also hugely supportive of the allergy community.

Many of you wil have seen and eaten Plamil products – but Adrian also supplies widely into the trade and manfuctures for export.

So a very worthy freefrom superhero if not THE FFFA superhero!'

Angela Mumby – Mrs Crimble's

'Relatively few consumers will have heard of Angela because she represents an absolutely vital but very rarely talked about group in freefrom – the product developers. Without our product developers and their brilliant behind the scenes work we would have no freefrom products at all!!

Angela has been developing an amazing range of products for Mrs Crimble's for the last ten years - all tasting great and although most people think of Mrs Crimble's as a purely gluten-free company, nearly all of the products Angela has developed have been not only gluten-free but milk and egg-free too.

So, representing the products developers another very worthy freefrom superhero if not THE FFFA superhero!'

Chris Hook – Warburtons

'While most of you will know Chris in the context of Warburton’s now very successful Newburn Bakehouse – with their amazing wraps, artisan and supermarket breads, rolls and crumpets - the older among you will remember Nutrition Point.

Nutrition Point was the company that Chris started way back in 1998 to import freefrom bread and cake mixes from, if I remember rightly, Canada. He went on to develop the Dietary Specials and Trufree brands and really  pioneered edible freefrom food –  mixes, bread biscuits and Dietary Special ready meals – and got into the supermarkets.  Without Nutrition Point’s work, many of you would have found it a great deal more difficult to find a market for your products.

So, both for his ongoing work with Newburn Bakehouse but especially for his pioneering work way back when – another very worthy freefrom superhero if not THE FFFA superhero!'

Lucinda Bruce-Gardyne – Genius Gluten Free

'Many of you may the know the story of how Lucinda – a professional cook – spent months trying to create a decent gluten-free bread so that her son could take a ‘normal’ sandwich to school with him.

Having finally done so, she did not stop there but went on to find a manufacturer with whom she could turn her loaf into a viable ‘supermarket bread’ – which looked, tasted behaved like 'normal' bread. This may not sound much now but in 2009 it was revolutionary and was the catalyst for moving freefrom out of its ‘medical’ ghetto and into the real world.

Now,  six years later, Genius products are not only well known all over the UK but Genius is spearheading the export drive to Europe and also to the US, Middle East and Australia.

So, for breaking the glass ceiling on  gluten-free bread – our final very worthy freefrom superhero, if not THE FFFA superhero!'
