Kirsty's dairy, wheat and gluten free Kids' Kitchen Range

Kirsty'sKirsty’s won the FFFA Innovation Award 2015 for their dairy, gluten and wheat free lasagne ready meal, and have just brought out Kids' Kitchen, a range of dairy, gluten and wheat free ready meals for children. The four meals we reviewed are packaged in attractive kid-friendly colourful sleeves, with food art pictures, and well-labelled clear ingredients and allergens list.

There is everything familiar and nothing unusual about these ready meals, except that they are very well made by a company that knows about freefrom, therefore they are guaranteed free from dairy, gluten and wheat. Apart from the fish pie, you might say that none of these meals should contain any of those allergens, but all too often ready-made foods do contain hidden wheat flour, or lactose powder. This range is well-made and cheap to buy, and busy parents can rest assured that their allergic kids are being well fed. Indeed, three of the four meals reviewed here contain no allergens at all.

Salmon and Cod Pie with Sweet Potato Mash: a creamy sauce, well made since it is dairy free, with good fish content and flavours (not too strong since it is for children, but certainly fishy enough!). topped with a  good sweet potato, carrot and potato mash, this pie has a good mash/fish/sauce ratio, and even though it contains peas and sweetcorn, they’re a little lost so parents could certainly augment with extra veg. And with a little black pepper but low salt levels this is a great introduction to a classic dish. We felt that the ingredients were a little squashed together, and being white text on blue background makes the bold allergens a little hard to read.

Salmon & Cod Pie: Sweet Potato Mash (42%) [Sweet Potato (45%), Potato, Carrot], Fish Sauce (40%) [Soya Milk, Dairy Free Crumb (Water, Cold-Pressed Coconut Oil, Rice, Salt, Sunflower Oil (contains Oregano), Lemon Juice, Apple Cider Vinegar, Thickeners: Arabic Gum, Xanthan Gum, Carob Flour), Sweetcorn (9%), Peas (9%), Onion, Cornflour, Fish Stock (Fish (44%) (Dried Cod (Fish), Fish Stock, Anchovies (Fish)), Partially Rehydrated Potato, Salt, Lemon Juice From Concentrate, Dried Onion, Sunflower Oil), Concentrated Lemon Juice, Olive Oil, Parsley, Chives, White Pepper], Salmon (9%) (Fish), Cod (9%) (Fish).

Sausage Casserole with Root Vegetables: pretty little discs of sliced herby pork sausage in a thick (someone thought too thick) hot pot sauce, with lots of parsnips, peppers, and carrots makes this a hearty dish for children. Simple, familiar flavours, a great tummy warmer!

Sausage Casserole: Sauce (70%) [Water, Chopped Tomatoes, Parsnip, Red Pepper (6%), Carrot (6%), Onion, Swede (6%), Cornflour, Chicken Stock (Chicken, Rehydrated Potato, Yeast Extract, Salt), Agave Syrup, Tomato Puree, Garlic Puree, Cumin, Paprika, Smoked Paprika, Thyme, Basil, Chilli Powder], Sliced Pork Sausage (15%) [Cooked Pork, Breadcrumb (Rice Flour, Gram Flour, Maize Starch, Salt, Dextrose), Leek, Parsley, Maize Starch, Tapioca Starch, Salt, Sage, Nutmeg, White Pepper, Coriander, Beef Collagen Casing (Contains Collagen, Water, Glycerol, Cellulose, Palm Oil)], Roasted Potatoes (15%) [Potato, Palm Oil].

Chicken Korma with Brown Rice: this korma has a good, rounded depth of flavours, and is not too spicy for kids unused to strong spices. With a nice amount of chicken and vegetables, plus apricot to add a little sweetness, we felt this could do with a little more rice, which might help to soak up more of the sauce – which is delicious, but there is quite a lot of it, and it tends towards the watery.

Chicken Korma: Korma Sauce (82%) [Water, Sweet Potato (16%), Red and Yellow Peppers (11%), Onion, Coconut Milk (Coconut, Water), Chickpeas (4%), Organic Apricots (4%), Cornflour, Agave Syrup, Ginger Puree, Tomato Puree, Garlic Puree, Coriander, Coconut Cream, Concentrated Lemon Juice, Ground Coriander, Turmeric, Cumin, Paprika, Cassia, Nutmeg, Garam Masala (Spices)], Chicken Breast (10%), Brown Basmati Rice (8%) [Brown Basmati Rice, Water].

Cottage Pie with Sweet Potato Mash: perfect, a great homemade cottage pie, simple, full of beef and carrots, peas, onion etc as you’d make at home. A nice nutritious twist using the sweet potato as a mash, as well as giving the pie a luscious pinky-orange colour.

Cottage Pie: Sauce (50%) [Beef (34%), Water, Onion, Peas (10%), Carrot (10%), Chopped Tomatoes, Beef Stock (Beef Stock (Beef Extract, Water), Salt), Cornflour, Worcester Sauce (Water, Spirit Vinegar, Sugar, Salt, Tamarind, Onion Powder, Garlic Powder, Ginger, Lemon Juice Concentrate, Clove, Chilli Powder), Tomato Puree, Parsley, Cracked Black Pepper], Sweet Potato Mash (50%) [Sweet Potato (45%), Potato, Carrot].
