FreeFrom Hero Award

FreeFrom Hero Award – Sponsored by Lucy Bee

Celebrating an individual who has made a major contribution to freefrom, in no matter how humble or exaltd a role.

  1. Chef Akila

Chef Akila is a 75 year-old Indian grandmother living in Yorkshire. After being diagnosed with cancer and serious medical problems 5 years ago she set out to develop a range of free-from, healthier gourmet Indian food. Using her traditional recipes and working with nutritionists and doctors she has developed more  than 25 dishes all of which are gluten free and six of which are free of all 14 allergens. Ingredients are locally sourced and all dishes are hand cooked, flash frozen and sold by mail order.

  1. Deb Bailey-Knibbs at the Labyrinth Holistic Café

Not only is Labyrinth a not-for-profit business, it is 100% for the community. Deb caters for everyone, all diets and are 100% gluten free. She and all her staff are knowledgeable, totally allergy aware, well trained, friendly and passionate about giving others the best experience they can. The idea is that the food can all be tweaked at the last minute to accommodate different diets and allergies. The food is also priced to be affordable by all.

Deb also operates a food bank, pay it forward scheme, and collects filled handbags for ladies on hard times.

  1. Lucy Finnemore at Higher Lank Farm

Lucy started catering for families with allergies over 10 years ago after a mum contacted her to ask if she could help and her passion and knowledge developed from there. She takes clear and meticulous steps to keep all her meals safe and free from cross contamination.

“I don’t think you realise how keyed up you are by food all the time, until you don’t need to be. We are now completely relaxed in Lucy’s care, which is just brilliant. We know she gets it – she understands cross contamination and ‘may contains’, and is immensely reassuring in her manner.”

  1. Dr Hazel Gowland of Allergy Action

Hazel has had a severe allergy to nuts and peanuts since early childhood and has survived a number of life-threatening reactions herself. She has been a tireless campaigner both with the Anaphlyaxis Campaign and through her own Allergy Action organisation.

Hazel investigates deaths and ‘near misses’ from food allergy, provides expert evidence and undertakes scientific, clinical and consumer research into why and how allergen avoidance may fail and how those at risk may be protected. She also supports and advises those at risk from severe food allergies and those who work with them including families, schools, food enforcement officers, local and national government, doctors, specialist nurses and dieticians.

In October 2018, Hazel completed a PhD – Food allergy: innovation in advocacy, research and training to support and protect those at risk at Kingston University, and has recently been appointed a Visiting Fellow in the School of Medicine at Southampton University

  1. Ryan Panchoo – Borough 22

Ryan makes doughnuts, but not just any doughnuts. His are gluten and milk and soy and egg free. Ryan started making freefrom doughnuts for his own family back in 2011 when his wife and children were diagnosed as gluten dairy intolerant. Now he sells them from his site and through various local outlets. But he is a hero within the freefrom community because of the endless hours he has devoted to creating bespoke doughnuts for children who can eat as few as four ingredients.

free from food awards
Nairn’s

The Free From Food Awards are one of the most credible awards on the circuit, and we tend to enter products every year.  Much of our innovation in recent years has been in the gluten free side of our business so it’s a great opportunity for us to showcase some of our new products.  To free from consumers, displaying the winners logo on pack is a sign of quality and safety, and a win certainly adds value to the conversations our sales team have with their buyer contacts when talking about listings.  The awards themselves are really straightforward to enter and very well organised and they’re attracting some great brands, both big and small, to enter which highlights just how far free from foods have come in recent years.

Bute Island

This year (2018) we won Gold at the Free From Food Awards for our Dairy Free Grated Mild Cheddar Sheese. We have submitted products to these awards over the last ten years, and have been proud to win awards for various products. The process of entering the products is clear and straight  forward. The Bute Island team have attended several of the awards ceremonies and found them to be not only enjoyable, but beneficial for the business. It’s always been a pleasure and an honour to be part of the Free From Awards.

ChocChick

We have been entering the FFF Awards since 2010 and have had some incredible networking opportunities, caught up with industry leaders, begun collaborations and even met with senior buyers who listed our products in stores, so to have won Gold this year for our Cacao Nibbles was the icing on the cake. We are incredibly proud to be part of the Free From family.

Mina Said-AllsoppWildcraft Bakery

The networking opportunities at the FFFA18 party have been really amazing – we’ve met people we have been following on instagram and twitter… We met the founder of Genius which is… AMAZING! We are so excited to put the freefrom logo on our website and all our products.

retrocorn, freefrom food awards
Greg Taylor Managing Director, Retrocorn

Our win opened a door to a national distributor in the UK allowing us to get our popcorn in front of all the big UK contract caterers, winning new business with Baxter Storey, Caterlink and many others!  A fantastic award like this really does get you noticed!  We are delighted with our win and will be entering our Hasta La Vista in next years award 100%

Emma HeathNairn’s

For us at Nairn’s, winning gold is as much about internal reward as it is about anything external or consumer facing.  For those involved in developing and trialling the products and bringing them to market, winning any of the FFAs further recognition of a job well done and gives a real sense of pride and achievement to the team.

FFFA19 Gold Winner for Caramelised Onion Flatbreads

Sue WarrenStrategic Development Director, Wellaby's (Unismack)

The FFFA have been at the forefront of driving innovation, awareness and availability of an increasing range in the Free From arena since before it was a trend. The FreeFrom Food awards remain a focus point for the industry and are a great platform for communication and engagement

Julia MarriottDietitian, allergy sufferer and judge at #FFFA

The website gives one place where parents can go and look to see which companies have been shortlisted, who won… it’s a great chance to see the range of products available on the freefrom market that aren’t just in their local supermarkets. Products that have got the FreeFrom Food Awards logo give parents confidence that not only do they taste good, but they have been checked for ingredients and safe manufacturing processes, that sort of thing – it gives them confidence in the products they are choosing.
